“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. (Matt. 5:6)
Why do the nations rage?
Physical wars begin when humans think they can define what is true and not true. We were never meant to make such decisions—but we try. As multiple wars rage across the earth, there is another we don’t hear much about. It is the war for truth.
We can trace our ambition to become like God back to the Garden of Eden. When Eve took the fruit, there became a chasm called sin between God and man. From that point on, man would strive against God until Jesus made a way for us back to the Garden.
Simeon prophesied that the coming of Jesus is like a sword that pierces the soul. His words reveal the thoughts and intentions of the human heart. Jesus came with a winnowing fork, to separate the sons of God from the sons of the evil one.1 The kingdom of heaven is greater than philanthropic works and even salvation from hell. It is when God tells His Son this:
Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.2
After Jesus was resurrected, He sat down at the right hand of God. He is currently praying for us until the day God says, “It’s time”. Revelation 5 shows us the first thing that happens after that. The slain Lamb is handed the title deed of the earth and breaks open its seals. The world begins the process of being cleansed from sin completely. This is when the inhabitants of the earth learn righteousness.3
The first coming of Jesus secured victory over sin and death. He reconciled God and man through His body on the cross. The second coming of Jesus is when He transforms the earth to “Garden of Eden” conditions, brings His throne down, and restores His kingdom to Israel. There is much more that can be said regarding this kingdom.
God’s story is way bigger than our own.
Whether we like it or not, His story is ours. The will of God liberates us from bondage to ourselves. It frees us from spending all our time on our own prosperity and how we can make our own lives better. Self-improvement apart from Jesus is a dangerous line to tread. Psalm 49 says it best:
Be not afraid when a man becomes rich, when the glory of his house increases. For when he dies he will carry nothing away; his glory will not go down after him. For though, while he lives, he counts himself blessed—and though you get praise when you do well for yourself—his soul will go to the generation of his fathers, who will never again see light. Man in his pomp yet without understanding is like the beasts that perish.4
The will of God not only frees us from self-obsession but also our insecurities. When we are consumed with God’s story, we realize that what people think about us is irrelevant in comparison to the Gospel going forth. When the enemy comes with accusation, the importance of our calling before God transcends our feeling of unworthiness. Our deficiencies become overshadowed by Christ and Christ crucified. Our name fades away in His. Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!5
The word of God will stand forever.
His word is the ultimate personal trainer to live the most fulfilling life possible. Doing the will of God is so fulfilling because it is the life we were made for. We don’t have to search for what lunch table we belong at anymore. We found it: the one with tax collectors, sinners, and the Son of God.
After we become born-again, Jesus hands us a shovel. It is a shovel to dig for the knowledge of God in the Bible. We begin a history of knowing God. The deeper we dig, the less we end up knowing and the more the words of Job come out of our mouths: Behold, God is great, and we know him not.6 David earnestly prayed that his inner life would be pleasing to the Lord. He used words like I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless7 and let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight.8 He prioritized a lifestyle of rejecting lesser pleasures for the greater pleasure of knowing God.
Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.9 God's plan to conform us into the image of His Son is by meditating on His words. This is filling the treasury of our hearts with knowledge of Jesus. In turn, this lifestyle fuels the proclamation of God’s word to the unbelieving world. What you are full of, you can’t contain. The Bible is the ultimate evangelism campaign.
Our food no longer looks like physical bread, but feasting on the Son of God. It is the food that satisfies every craving, every longing, and every desire. When we eat of this bread, we will live forever.10 We are investing into eternity, building a life that survives testing by fire.11 This is life to our dying bodies. This is life to our perishing world.
We hold the truth that will end all wars.
It is time to start digging.
the deeper you dig
only by the Spirit can I know the Son only by the Son can I know the Father open my eyes to see the seeds hidden in the ground beneath give me a shovel and a heart to seek calloused hands pulled back hair dirty shoes the deeper you dig the darker it gets the lower you go the more diamonds you find I want beauty so captivating tears in my eyes seeing light like it’s the first time let me find jewels so beautiful I don’t have words that could ever express their weight I take this treasure and hide it in my heart knowing you buried it there waiting for me to find
